Almost everything that goes wrong is one of the three below. The app also has the same answers built into its own FAQ button.
Almost always this means the driver rejected the mode, and the app will have said so with error code -2. Windows can only switch to resolutions your graphics driver already publishes.
Add it once, in whichever of these you have:
One thing that catches people out. Creating the resolution is sometimes not enough on its own. If the app still cannot see it, go back and apply that resolution once from the control panel, accepting the Keep changes prompt. Windows publishes some custom modes only after they have been used once. After that the app can reach it normally.
Running as Administrator does not help. Changing resolution needs no elevated rights, so if that is your theory, it is not the problem.
The resolution changed, but something is letterboxing it rather than stretching it to fill the panel. Two places do that.
Your GPU driver. Scaling has to be set to stretch to full panel, and it has to be performed by the GPU or the display rather than left aspect correct. In NVIDIA Control Panel that is Adjust desktop size and position, Scaling mode set to Full screen, with Override the scaling mode set by games and programs ticked.
Your monitor. Many panels have their own aspect setting in the on screen menu, often called Aspect, Picture Size or Wide Mode. If the driver is set correctly and you still get bars, that menu is the next place to look.
The app changes the resolution of your Windows desktop. Games running full screen pick that up. Games running in a borderless or windowed mode follow the desktop too, but some titles re-apply their own resolution when they gain focus or when a match starts.
For Valorant specifically, switch once you are fully loaded into the match. Doing it at agent select gives you black bars, and starting a new game puts you back to native anyway.
| Windows | 10 version 1809 or newer, 64 bit |
|---|---|
| Rights | Normal user. Administrator is not needed and does not help. |
| Multiple monitors | The app changes the primary display. Per monitor selection is not supported yet. |
| Network | None. The app works with no connection at all, by design. |

What helps, in one message: your graphics card and driver version, the resolution you clicked, the exact message the app showed you including any error code in brackets, and whether the resolution appears in your GPU control panel. That is usually enough to answer in one reply rather than four.
